First Steps Behavioral Therapy serves individuals of all age groups, from toddlers to adults.
While we do welcome private-pay clients, it's important to note that due to the continuous costs associated with therapy, we strongly advise considering Medicaid or a private commercial insurance plan.
In our experience, the majority of children with a diagnosis are eligible for Medicaid, unless the child possesses significant personal wealth, such as a substantial trust or personal account. It's important to note that the financial situation of the parents should not affect the child's eligibility, and this information should not be included in the child's Medicaid application. Medicaid provides numerous benefits at no cost. We highly recommend seeking free assistance from reputable organizations like "Moms in Motion," a non-profit organization that does not charge any fees for helping parents secure Medicaid coverage for eligible children, typically within approximately 30 days.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientifically grounded, evidence-based methodology employed to improve both developmental deficits and challenging behaviors in individuals diagnosed with autism and related disabilities. The fundamental aim of ABA therapy is to concentrate on enhancing the well-being of the individual and their family by addressing behaviors that hold social significance.
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a healthcare professional who has earned a master's degree and holds national certification through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Similarly, a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) is a healthcare professional with a bachelor's degree or graduate degree, completed BACB-approved coursework, and possesses national certification as a BCaBA. The BCBA or BCaBA Consultant plays a crucial role in overseeing the clinical treatment for learners, which includes evaluating clinical needs, conducting assessments, creating treatment plans, monitoring progress, and supervising Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs).
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) has successfully completed a BACB-approved 40-hour training program and obtained national certification from the BACB. RBTs work directly with the learner, implementing therapeutic goals as outlined by the overseeing consultant.
We gladly accept Virginia Medicaid and will perform a benefit verification prior to commencing services. Generally, families are accountable for co-payments or co-insurance fees, which are determined by their specific insurance plans. In cases where we are not in-network with your insurance, we also provide private pay alternatives.
It is not! Or at least, it should not be. Like any service, there may be variation in the methods used and results obtained depending on the training, education, and skill of those delivering the service. However, there is nothing inherent in the basic principles of ABA that prevents services from being humanistic, intentional, silly, compassionate or fun, all while teaching meaningful, real-life skills (as is done at First Steps). All First Steps clinicians will partner with you to select goals and treatment strategies based your child’s interests and your family’s values. Meaningful, positive growth is our goal.
The timeline for commencing services can fluctuate based on factors such as funding status, the assessments that need to be conducted, and the current availability of our Program Directors (BCBAs). We encourage you to get in touch with us directly for the most up-to-date information on our current availability, as it can vary. In cases where we are unable to initiate the intake process immediately, we are more than willing to assist you in finding an alternative provider who can meet your needs. Additionally, we can add you to our interest list for potential future services. Your well-being and progress are of utmost importance to us, and we are here to support you in any way we can.
Receiving the benefits of ABA therapy doesn't necessitate a formal diagnosis of autism. However, certain insurance companies may stipulate a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to offer coverage for ABA therapy. Therefore, it is crucial to verify with your insurance provider to understand their specific requirements and coverage policies. Your provider can offer guidance on the prerequisites for accessing ABA services tailored to your unique needs.
